We were thrilled to be a part of the inaugural Hackney History Festival in May 2024.
The festival, which took place from May 10th to May 12th, was a celebration of Hackney's rich and diverse history. It featured 49 events including talks, walks, guided tours, film screenings, and a quiz, with over 1679 participants attending.
As part of the festival, Hidden Tudors Tours delivered a walk about Tudor history in Hackney. Next year, we will be focusing on the role of the East India Company in shaping Hackney's history. Stay tuned for more details.
Also, a special mention to The Hackney Society and The Friends of the Hackney Archives. Both these organisations have been instrumental in promoting Hackney's history and supporting interest in the borough's past.
The Hackney Society, founded in 1967, aims to promote the highest standards in design and protect Hackney's unique heritage. They have been actively involved in engaging with the local community and experts to encourage exemplary new design, regeneration, and conservation of the borough's built and natural environments. Through various platforms such as their newsletter, publications, walks, talks, meetings, website, and social media presence, they have been successful in raising awareness about Hackney's history and preserving its heritage for future generations.
Similarly, The Friends of the Hackney Archives has been a strong advocate for using Hackney's Archives to explore the individuals, families, communities, organisations, buildings, and neighbourhoods that have shaped local history. They have also played a crucial role in supporting the archives by raising funds for new materials and conservation efforts. With regular meetings, talks, events, and publications such as The Hackney Terrier newsletter and Hackney History journal, they have been actively engaging with their members and promoting awareness of Hackney's history.
Please click on the links if you are interested in joining The Friends of the Hackney Archives or becoming a member of the Hackney Society. Your support will not only help promote these organisations but also contribute to preserving and promoting Hackney's rich history.
